I don't know how they manage it, but my children always know when a special day is upon us. It seems like things never quite go as planned on days that I absolutely need them to. It all started at 4:45 this morning when my little man, Jude, decided that he wanted to be awake for the day. I did not give into his cries mainly for selfish reasons.....I was NOT ready to be awake for the day. He resolved his issue and went back to sleep. I had moved myself out onto the couch by that time so that Aaron and I would not both have to listen to him fussing through the monitor. One of us should sleep......& I pulled the short straw I guess.
Maya woke me up on the couch at 6:30 and we began our day. I was busy making/cleaning up breakfast, emptying/reloading the dishwasher, washing/folding laundry, making beds, etc. in preparation for my lunchtime company. Jude usually naps around 9:00 and that was when my shower was to take place. At 8:30, the lovely men from the cable company decided they wanted to trench in our cable wire...which happens to lay right outside Jude's window - Strike 1. I decided, after holding my fussy fellow for 30 minutes or so, that maybe he'd nap despite the noise since he was so tired. I NEEDED that shower! He did, for about 35 minutes. Long enough.
Aunt Ashley arrived at 10:45 to pick up Maya for a fun lunch at McDonald's. Maya had been talking about it all morning long and then proceeded to throw the biggest fit of her life when it was actually time to go (she does this a lot right now). She has a very hard time with good-byes of any sort. Strike 2. Ashley and I worked together to force her out the door and into her carseat, Maya bucking and screaming the entire time. We got her safely buckled and ready to go. I knew that if she could just get her out of the driveway, she'd be fine......and she was. I was in tears as I watched her pull away. I really wish she wasn't so indecisive sometimes. I felt bad that I'd made her go, but it was only because I knew she'd have a wonderful time.
As I'm waiting for my company to arrive, Aaron calls from work and says he's sick and coming home for the rest of the day. Strike 3. Now, I was thrilled to have him home, but it's almost harder to have a sick husband at home than to have a healthy one at work. It's frustrating to have 2 extra hands at home that are completely worthless :) Don't know how single parents do it! He rested all afternoon while I did my usual routine with the children.
Maya came home from her lunch date and took a nap at the same time Jude took one! Bonus! That was nice. Jude got up, ate and then pooped all over himself.....Strike 4, and then peed all over me when I was getting him ready for a bath to clean up the poop......Strike 5. Then Maya woke up super grouchy and bedtime couldn't come around again soon enough. Strike-6. Two time outs, dinner and couple Caillou episodes later, she was pleasant again and we enjoyed what was left of the day together! Jude went to bed at 6:10 and I think he was glad for that.....he'd been to bed "late" the last two nights (after 7) so he was sleepy :)
Tomorrow can only be better, right?

7 Years of Wedded Bliss
Well, we've made it this far and we're still going strong!! Today marks our 7 year anniversary and I couldn't be happier! I recall people telling me that they'd been married for 7 years and thinking, "Wow, they're really old," and I'm hoping I don't illicit that same response from the people I've told. Even so, life is wonderful. I've heard rumors of the "7 year itch" or the "7 year slump." I'm planning to avoid such itches and slumps and I have high hopes of them not paying me a visit.
Aaron's and my 7 years together have been filled with wonderful shared memories. Of course there was the actual wedding day-magical, and the obvious memories of the births of our two perfect children, building our home, vacations, etc. But what about the little things?? What about the times we sat outside around a campfire, underneath the stars, talking about our future? Or the times we would cuddle together on the couch and watch a rented movie?? Singing along to the radio together in the car? And the time Aaron used Desitin on Maya's face because he mistook it for lotion? LOL! (Just had to throw that one in)
It's always so sad when I stop and think of how much I'm afraid of forgetting. Just like watching our children grow up way too fast, there are so many wonderful moments in my marriage that seem to slip away from me too. I wish there was a way of recording it all to play back anytime I wanted. My wedding is on DVD and I find myself watching it fairly frequently recalling the feelings I felt for Aaron that day and the nerves and the excitement and the dreams of our future together. If only my whole life with him could be captured that way. We've shared so many special times together that I wish I could experience them all over again.........again & again.
I can only look to the future, however, and attempt to remember what I can of our past together. I can't wait to find out what great treasures await us as we continue on life's adventure.

Girls' Night In
Last night, I had the pleasure of spending the evening with 6 other women that I consider not only great friends, but family! It was a group of mothers and daughters.....and then there was me, the daughter-in-law, but I felt just as much a part of the group as anyone else :) We all met at my mother-in-law, Lesa's, house for an evening of fun!! A meatless dinner was on the menu in observance of Lent. We all had our assignments of what to bring. I was on appetizer duty along with my sister-in-law Ashley. She made some yummy dips and a tasty grape salad to go with dinner. I made a cheesy spinach artichoke dip.
We all filled up on snacks while our dinner of spinach-stuffed shells, made by Karen, baked in the oven. Dinner was delicious!! We had such a great time laughing and chatting throughout our meal.
After dinner was game time. All of the remaining snacks were placed in the middle of the table (because God forbid we have to walk a few feet and burn off some calories to get them :) and we set up to play Taboo. After dividing off into teams. Justine and I were "The Milkmaids" since we were both just that, breastfeeding moms. Liz and Ashley were "The Double D wannabes.....enough said, and the "Mature" women of the group decided to call themselves "The Vibes"....(insert your own assumptions here) LOL! It took us all a few rounds to get the hang of the game, but soon we were all getting into the spirit. We all decided that Karen should just play for every team because she was anyways. It seemed to be hard for her to remember when it was her turn to guess an answer. Too hilarious!!
The Milkmaids won and decided that the losers should have to take a shot........of breastmilk. Just kidding!! But we did brag, do some fist bumps, and I think I even saw Justine stand up and do a happy dance.
On to dessert. Dessert was Mary's assignment for the evening and I'll have to admit that we all had our doubts about the teeny, tiny, little pan that she brought and placed in the freezer. We all kept harrassing her with questions about her dessert's ability to feed all of us. As it turned out, we all LOVED the dessert.......and there was definitely more than enough. It was a frozen strawberry and chocolate something or other. Whatever it was called, I want the recipe! It was a great way to end the evening!
Ashley and I found that after dinner and after dessert, both, that if we simply pretended to be deep in discussion or acted like were still munching a little that everyone else quickly sprang into clean-up action. So........we just sat and let them do ALL the work. How nice, right? Nobody seemed to notice and we loved it!
What a great time!

Teppanyaki Lunch
The kids and I met my parents, my sister, Callie, and niece, Macy at Kobe for lunch today. My mom had recently been to eat there with my brother for the "Teppanyaki Lunch Special" and just raved about it, so we all humored her and went along with her :) I was looking forward to the meal because I had eaten there once before and not only was the food really good, it was exciting to watch them prepare it for you. Quite the show!! I just wasn't sure if it was going to be Maya's cup of tea.
My mom and I had discussed that Maya was either going to love it or she was going to hate it. She tends to be "shy" around new people and situations (usually for about, oh, 30 seconds) before warming up and putting on a brave smile. She pulled that same stunt today by hiding behind chairs and my legs when she saw that we'd be sitting at a table with an unknown woman and her son.......WARNING: STRANGER DANGER!!!
So, once the 30 seconds passed and she decided to get over that, we ordered our meal and out came the chef. Maya had to lean down and hide behind the table for a few minutes as he smiled at her.......she was being "shy" again. Time passed and she decided that he was OK and she smiled as she watched him skillfully flinging around his cooking utensils. She laughed hysterically as all of us attempted to catch pieces of flying broccoli in our mouths, but wanted us to know that she wasn't interested in attempting it herself. Then our cook decided it was time to really get the show started and he lit the whole grill on fire!!! You could feel the blast of heat We all watched in awe and Macy and Maya both burst into tears! Jude was quietly mesmerized.
We managed to calm everybody down & eat our delicious meal. Maya & I shared the chicken, rice & veggies. She ate really well & seemed to enjoy herself once she got over her initial fear of stangers.....& huge flaming grills! One of the women that worked there came up to my mom and lifted Jude out of her arms to hold him, too, which was quite interesting. My mom, knowing that I'm a freak about germs and strange people touching my kids, looked at me like "What do you want me to do??" I gave her the go-ahead by just smiling. He really seemed to like this small, Japanese woman a lot. It's just always odd to me when people do that kind of thing because I would never DREAM of picking up a stranger's child!! But maybe that's how they roll in Japan. Who knows!?
The whole experience was a lot of fun & I hope my mom tries to convince me to go back again really soon!

My niece & nephew are cooler than your's
Being an Aunt again has been so amazing! It's almost surreal actually. It's funny to me that I can be so OK with my children calling me "mommy" but being called "Aunt Cari" makes me feel REALLY special! Maybe it's because being an Aunt comes with less responsibility, so in a way, I feel the "love em and leave em" credo of grandparents applies to me as well. I remember my Aunts and Uncles were always so much fun when I was a child and I aspire to that also. Sometimes I feel like I'm so distracted with my own children (which isn't a bad thing) that I miss out on the whole experience though.......does that make sense?? Like, my sister and my brother got to be "Aunt" & "Uncle" before being "Mom" and "Dad." Does that make them better at it?? Perhaps.
I know this isn't a new phenomenon or anything & maybe I'm talking in circles, but I think there should be a special day each year that you get to spend only with your nieces and nephews while someone watches your own kids for you!! Then you can be completely fun and undistracted by your own brood.....I think our nieces and nephews deserve this, right?
I, personally, have THE BEST niece and nephew ever!! I'm soooo in love with them :) I can't wait to watch them grow and interact with my own children. They're going to be the best of friends, I'm just sure of it! I just feel so blessed to have such close relationships with my sister and brother and their spouses, not to mention my whole family. Life just wouldn't be the same without them......and especially not without their adorable offspring. So, this is just my written tribute to my wonderful family, but mostly to Macy Claire and Cohen Michael. I love you two and I am looking forward to what life has in store for you! Just thinking of you both makes me smile, and I hope that in years to come, thinking of me will cause you to do the same :)
Written in loving memory of my very first niece, Keira Kay........you are incredibly missed, sweet girl. I love you.
Love,
Aunt Cari

When blowing out the candles loses its luster
Today was the 4th and final birthday celebration for Maya's 3rd birthday........thank the Lord! I think Maya shares my sentiments. It was so much fun at party number 1, but a week and half of celebrating later, and she's soooo over it!
Having already had a couple celebrations, I decided to forego ordering a cake and try my hand at making my own! I also decided to make a 2nd dessert in case the one wasn't enough. We also made a full lunch for everybody. Following this party, we decided that we must be crazy! That's a lot of work! Aaron smoked some yummy babyback ribs in his new Weber smoker. I prepared Robin's party potatoes (thanks to my mommy for her help in the kitchen ;), seven layer salad, chips/dip and then thawed some of our family's homemade applesauce. Then we had a frosted giant cookie as our "cake" and I made some adorable ice cream cone cupcakes!

Lunch was delicious and then came time for the presents! I don't know how 3 year olds are supposed to act, so I get a little embarrassed when my daughter starts ripping into all the presents like the Tazmanian Devil. She'll have 4 gifts open before anyone even knows she's in the room!! So, I attempted to get her to slow down and find out who the gifts were from. It was a shower of tissue and wrapping paper! Nobody even knew what hit them......& then it was over.
On to dessert......my pride and joy of the day. I had never decorated a cake, so I was pretty proud of the way her's turned out! It got the message across and it tasted phenomenal if I do say so myself! The cupcake cones were really yummy too! And a big shout out to Prairie Farms for the delicious vanilla ice cream!! Way to go PF!
We did run into a bit of a problem at "Happy Birthday to You" time however. As you've seen in previous posts, Maya truly enjoys blowing out the candles.........today, she was having none of it! We all started in on the "Happy Birthdays" & Maya just up and left the table, yelling to stop singing to her and that she WAS NOT blowing out the candles. Her rude demeanor and smart mouth bought her a short time-out and a "probably too nice & understanding" talk with her Mamaw (all you grandmas out there know how it is :). But after all that, Birthday Girl came and joined us for dessert.........but still no luck on the candle front!
We all had a wonderful time visiting and enjoying some fresh air outside today as well. Aaron put the swings back on our swingset and Maya got to play in her "playground" for the first time in months! She was thrilled. Her day was complete.....or so we thought.....then came the final birthday gift. The Barbie "motorcycle." Maya was elated!! I've never seen her move so quickly! Off she went and she loved it!! Even if her birthday celebrations did drag out too long, at least it ended on a high note.

The blasted "shocks"
Today was, unfortunately for me, the day for Maya's annual well-child check up. I have spent the last week prepping her for this appointment by weighing her on the scale, measuring how tall she was, pretending to look in her eyes, ears and mouth with a flashlight, and listening to her heart/lungs/belly with my stethoscope. I thought we were golden! She was so excited to go to the "docker!!"
Aunt Ashley came over to stay with Jude for us........& having survived this experience, I'm so thankful that we enlisted her services. Maya bid Aunt Ashley a hurried and happy "good-bye" as we were leaving. Ashley and I joked back and forth about how we hoped that her excitement would not be short-lived. We should have maybe said a prayer or something.
Upon arriving at the doctor's office, we put her name in with the receptionist and I told Maya we had to wait until the nurse came through the door & called her name. Then, out of nowhere, Maya says "I smell shocks (shots)." She smelled them?? What in the world? What does a shot even smell like?? Maybe it was the smell of fear. It all kinda went downhill from there.
As predicted, the nurse came out & called her name, only to be greeted by a not-so-nice version of my once excited daughter. I had to carry her back to the exam room, remove her coat & shoes for her, stand on the scale with her, hold her down to be measured (instead of standing against the wall to be measured since she refused) and then hold her as she sobbed for the entire exam. THEN WE GOT 2 SHOTS to finish out the visit with a BANG!! What a great time had by all! For all you mommies that feel so bad taking your little babies in for their first, second and even third round of immunizations........suck it up, cause you've got nothing on me! You haven't known guilt until you look in the eyes of your 3 year old who is telling you "They hurt me, they hurt my legs, I don't like shots, etc."
So, do I feel like supermom today?! Yes! Not by making my child happy...no, no, no....... but just by helping her to find that inner strength to move on after a scary experience.

You can call me Betty Crocker......but you may want to reconsider.....
Maya and I have always loved to buy pretzels at the mall when we go shopping. I know my little sister, Callie, shares the same affinity for them as well! There's just something about their carb-filled goodness that makes a girl smile. I've often wondered what makes a pretzel taste like a pretzel, instead of just bread. Today, I decided to look up some recipes and give making them a whirl!
I found a recipe for "Giant Soft Pretzels" on food.com and went to work. Let me just preface this by saying.....those people at Auntie Anne's and Pretzel Time have got it going on!! I don't know how they make all pretzels look the same....not to mention actually looking like a pretzel. The dough was easy enough, and with the help of my Kitchenaid mixer dough hook, it was a sinch. Next came the "pretzel" making.
Now......you may be saying "Those pretzels look OK. What is she talking about?" Not so fast. After this step came the boiling in Baking Soda/Water. Did you know that it is nearly impossible to keep a pretzel in pretzel form when moving it from counter to water to paper towel for drying?? I stumbled upon that tidbit of info today.
Even though some of them turned out less-than-perfect looking (please refer to picture at right :), it was still fun and they still tasted JUST LIKE a vendor bought pretzel. In that case, I will consider this venture a success!! Maya was so excited and thought they tasted perfect! I plan to freeze them and thaw for snacks for the rest of the week! So, now it's up to you.....Betty Crocker or not?? I'm voting "not," but I'm sure that even Betty had a flop or two in all her years of cooking.

My Birthday Princess
Maya turns 3 today!! In honor of this momentous occasion, Aaron took the day off from work so that we could all spend the day together celebrating. We started the day with a healthy breakfast of Casey's donuts.
We decided to take the kids to 5 Points in Washington for a morning of swimming. Jude had never been before and Maya hadn't been since early in my pregnancy with Jude, so she was excited!! We all had so much fun and it was amazing to see how much more independent Maya has become in the 9 months since she'd been swimming! Her new Puddle Jumper life jacket helped with that. She had so much fun! Aaron and I both enjoyed the time with the kids. I would like to always remember this morning as one of the happiest times in my life. So much joy, laughter and love shared with my 3 favorite people!
We plan to finish out the day with chicken on the grill and going to watch Aaron play basketball in the Eureka League tonight! What a great day full of family fun and togetherness. Days like today make me want 5 more kids........

Indian Cuisine? Not so much.
Our family had an invitation to have lunch at one of Aaron's co-worker's homes today. This man and his wife are here from India for one year on a work assignment. We happily went, considering it a cultural experience, not to mention doing something nice for a young couple wi th no friends or family for thousands of miles. Having never tasted Indian food, I was looking forward to the chance to try something new. Maya stayed with my parents while we went because this couple did not have children and I figured Maya may be extremely bored with all of us "big people"....& I didn't know if she would eat either.
My nose directed me to the proper apartment building. It was rather overwhelming when we entered and I felt as though I'd already eaten a full Indian meal before I even walked in their front door....not a good start to this experience. I don't know about you, but I'm one of those people who can hardly stand crock-pot cooking for the same reason. I feel like I've been eating the food in the crock-pot all day by the time dinner rolls around. I think I have a disgustingly keen sense of smell....even when I'm not pregnant.
So, lunch time came and I DID taste everything. I had to choke back my gagging (literally) and wash down a few bites with my coca-cola (no ice). As I was pushing food around my plate to make it appear that I'd eaten some, I look around to see that everyone else is diving in and actually cleaning their plates.....there was no dog to sneak food to. This sweet couple hosting also did not eat while we were there. They said they had just eaten breakfast and would eat later. I thought I was being fed the last supper. They stood over us, watching our every move while we ate. I felt SO bad.
Jude came along and made nice with the lovely Indian couple. They were smitten with him and played with him and carried him around the whole time we were there. That was fun.
We came home smelling of faraway spices and other things I wasn't sure what they were. I had lots of laundry to do to remove this smell and I also needed a BIG snack. Needless to say, I won't be partaking in any Indian Cuisine anytime soon. Glad to have tried it, but wished I could have liked at least one thing. Suppose I should just pat myself on the back for not barfing right there at the table.
