Our family had an invitation to have lunch at one of Aaron's co-worker's homes today. This man and his wife are here from India for one year on a work assignment. We happily went, considering it a cultural experience, not to mention doing something nice for a young couple wi th no friends or family for thousands of miles. Having never tasted Indian food, I was looking forward to the chance to try something new. Maya stayed with my parents while we went because this couple did not have children and I figured Maya may be extremely bored with all of us "big people"....& I didn't know if she would eat either.
My nose directed me to the proper apartment building. It was rather overwhelming when we entered and I felt as though I'd already eaten a full Indian meal before I even walked in their front door....not a good start to this experience. I don't know about you, but I'm one of those people who can hardly stand crock-pot cooking for the same reason. I feel like I've been eating the food in the crock-pot all day by the time dinner rolls around. I think I have a disgustingly keen sense of smell....even when I'm not pregnant.
So, lunch time came and I DID taste everything. I had to choke back my gagging (literally) and wash down a few bites with my coca-cola (no ice). As I was pushing food around my plate to make it appear that I'd eaten some, I look around to see that everyone else is diving in and actually cleaning their plates.....there was no dog to sneak food to. This sweet couple hosting also did not eat while we were there. They said they had just eaten breakfast and would eat later. I thought I was being fed the last supper. They stood over us, watching our every move while we ate. I felt SO bad.
Jude came along and made nice with the lovely Indian couple. They were smitten with him and played with him and carried him around the whole time we were there. That was fun.
We came home smelling of faraway spices and other things I wasn't sure what they were. I had lots of laundry to do to remove this smell and I also needed a BIG snack. Needless to say, I won't be partaking in any Indian Cuisine anytime soon. Glad to have tried it, but wished I could have liked at least one thing. Suppose I should just pat myself on the back for not barfing right there at the table.
