I don't know how they manage it, but my children always know when a special day is upon us. It seems like things never quite go as planned on days that I absolutely need them to. It all started at 4:45 this morning when my little man, Jude, decided that he wanted to be awake for the day. I did not give into his cries mainly for selfish reasons.....I was NOT ready to be awake for the day. He resolved his issue and went back to sleep. I had moved myself out onto the couch by that time so that Aaron and I would not both have to listen to him fussing through the monitor. One of us should sleep......& I pulled the short straw I guess.
Maya woke me up on the couch at 6:30 and we began our day. I was busy making/cleaning up breakfast, emptying/reloading the dishwasher, washing/folding laundry, making beds, etc. in preparation for my lunchtime company. Jude usually naps around 9:00 and that was when my shower was to take place. At 8:30, the lovely men from the cable company decided they wanted to trench in our cable wire...which happens to lay right outside Jude's window - Strike 1. I decided, after holding my fussy fellow for 30 minutes or so, that maybe he'd nap despite the noise since he was so tired. I NEEDED that shower! He did, for about 35 minutes. Long enough.
Aunt Ashley arrived at 10:45 to pick up Maya for a fun lunch at McDonald's. Maya had been talking about it all morning long and then proceeded to throw the biggest fit of her life when it was actually time to go (she does this a lot right now). She has a very hard time with good-byes of any sort. Strike 2. Ashley and I worked together to force her out the door and into her carseat, Maya bucking and screaming the entire time. We got her safely buckled and ready to go. I knew that if she could just get her out of the driveway, she'd be fine......and she was. I was in tears as I watched her pull away. I really wish she wasn't so indecisive sometimes. I felt bad that I'd made her go, but it was only because I knew she'd have a wonderful time.
As I'm waiting for my company to arrive, Aaron calls from work and says he's sick and coming home for the rest of the day. Strike 3. Now, I was thrilled to have him home, but it's almost harder to have a sick husband at home than to have a healthy one at work. It's frustrating to have 2 extra hands at home that are completely worthless :) Don't know how single parents do it! He rested all afternoon while I did my usual routine with the children.
Maya came home from her lunch date and took a nap at the same time Jude took one! Bonus! That was nice. Jude got up, ate and then pooped all over himself.....Strike 4, and then peed all over me when I was getting him ready for a bath to clean up the poop......Strike 5. Then Maya woke up super grouchy and bedtime couldn't come around again soon enough. Strike-6. Two time outs, dinner and couple Caillou episodes later, she was pleasant again and we enjoyed what was left of the day together! Jude went to bed at 6:10 and I think he was glad for that.....he'd been to bed "late" the last two nights (after 7) so he was sleepy :)
Tomorrow can only be better, right?
